《春苑》は、1935年頃、描かれた晩年期の作品。唐美人の足元に散った白梅の花びらの表現により、中国の故事にあたる梅の精『羅浮仙』を描いたものと考えられる。描線は暖かなクリーム色に統一されている。春の気配と女性の気品が見事に融合している。松園が理想とした「清澄で香り高い珠玉のような絵」とも言える作品である。

Spring Garden (1935)
A luminous jewel of purity and fragrance
Painted around 1935 during the later years of Shōen Uemura’s career, Spring Garden is believed to depict the plum blossom spirit Luofu Xian from Chinese legend through the scattered white plum petals at the feet of a Tang-style beauty.
The entire composition is unified by warm cream-colored outlines, harmonizing the atmosphere of spring with the refined grace of the woman portrayed. This work exemplifies Uemura’s ideal of a “pure, fragrant, jewel-like painting.”
