Shōen Uemura – Nihonga Painter

上村松園 日本画家

(April 24, 1875 – August 27, 1949)
Born in Kyoto City, Shōen Uemura lost her father shortly before her birth and was raised by her mother, Nakako. In 1887, she entered the Kyoto Prefectural Art School and studied under renowned painters Shōnen Suzuki, Bairei Kōno, and Seiho Takeuchi. At the age of 15, her work, The Beauty of Four Seasons, received top honors at the 3rd National Industrial Exhibition and was purchased by a British prince. In 1941, she became a member of the Imperial Art Academy, and in 1948, she became the first woman to receive the Order of Culture. Uemura was celebrated for her refined bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women), which radiated elegance and grace.

略歴（明治8年4月24日～昭和24年8月27日）
京都市生まれ。父親は松園が誕生する直前に他界したため母仲子によって育てられる。明治20年、京都府画学校入学後、鈴木松年（すずき　しょうねん）、幸野楳嶺（こうの　ばいれい）、竹内栖鳳（たけうち　せいほう）の門下で研鑽を積む。明治23年、弱冠15才にして「四季美人図」が第3回内国勧業博覧会で一等褒状受賞、英国皇子のお買い上げとなる。昭和16年、帝国美術院会員。昭和23年、女性初の文化勲章受章。気品あふれる美人画を得意とした。
